Neither Could Dylan
Neither Could Dylan emerged in the summer of 2020 with an aesthetic all her own. Affectionately dubbed “Canadian Punkabilly,” it’s a little punk, a little folk, a little pop and all rock and roll.
Her initial release, an unapologetic entirely DIY-independent 3-song EP called A Quiet Place to Scream set the tone for an explosive solo undertaking with an empathetic mission. Born out of the incessant need to tell the stories that brought her the most pain and frustration over the years that were bottled and carried on her own shoulders, Neither Could Dylan was quick to discern that the experiences and situations she was struggling with were not exactly uncommon and more than that, talking about them might be the only real way to reach some semblance of peace or a resolution. Among those issues: alcohol and drug abuse, sexual assault, suicide and depression, but if you ask Neither Could Dylan, nothing is off the table.
On the anniversary of her sobriety, she released her first LP The Clearing under her given name Jaimee Jakobczak and in April 2023 she officially became Neither Could Dylan with the release of her follow-up LP Acceptance. Whereas Jaimee Jakobczak’s The Clearing definitely held close the feverish and sometimes antagonistic punk attitude of early idols The Clash and Sum41, Acceptance embraced a tamer and more introspective look at the world and her place within it. It has heard comparisons to a variety of artists, from Hole to The Pogues and Souxie and the Banshees. Acceptance, which largely reflects on personal accountability and the willingness to work towards becoming the best version of yourself, leans into the mellow acoustic-based foundation that has become a staple in her sound and the result is a much more vulnerable collection of songs that allow for better communication about the experiences that inspired them.
In March of 2023, Neither Could Dylan dropped the follow-up to Acceptance, a 3-part theatrical 17-track odyssey titled Foxchase that dove further into the trenches of her youth and upbringing and the experiences that have had significant impact since.
Currently, Neither Could Dylan is recording a new EP due out…. well, stand by a moment.
